Pompeii - street scenes

Here are some of the cool things we saw while we were out and about in Pompeii.

In the backyard. I doubt that the date palm is 2000 years old, but there could have been date palms back in the day.

Courtyards of Pompeii

Some courtyards in Pompeii. Notice that many of the frescoes are still visible.

This outer courtyard is visible through a darkened domicile. I generated a pseudo-HDR image to show the bright outer court yard and the very dark indoors frescoes.

Pompeii Basilica

The Basilica in Pompeii. Again I have two copies; an HDR and a standard version. Which do you prefer?

Pompeii Forum

Here are some pictures of the Forum in Pompeii. At the far end is the Temple of Jupiter. In the distance is Mount Vesuvius. I have been playing around with HDR photography; a couple of the the images below are pseudo-HDR images. The first two are a pair, the HDR version and the standard version. Which do you prefer?

Forum, Temple of Jupiter, and Mount Vesuvius. HDR version.

Caught in time

A large number of holes were found in the volcanic deposits around Pompeii that represented corpses of people and animals that were buried by the hot ash. The ash lithified before the corpses decayed so that a good mold of the deceased remained. Early in the excavation it was discovered that filling these molds with plaster produced remarkable casts of the victims of the eruption. Here are three of those casts:

Sleeping or taking cover, I don't know.
